Evelyn Joyce Nixon Hinton Scholarship Fund

The Evelyn Joyce Nixon Hinton Scholarship Fund (formerly The Flow Ministries, Inc. Scholarship Fund) was established in 2004 to assist a young woman graduating with a B- or C average from Prince George's County Public Schools. The founder and President of the scholarship fund, Minister Alice F. Nixon Harris, had determined through research that many high school students evelynJoyceImgwho graduate with C averages go on to achieve at much higher levels in college and in their careers. This knowledge spurred Minister Harris' continued efforts to help young women fulfill the call in their lives by mentoring, teaching, providing financial assistance, and living the life she speaks.

The late Evelyn Joyce Nixon Hinton, for whom the fund was renamed, attended St. Augustine's University in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Education. She continued her education with graduate studies at Howard University in Washington, D.C., earning a Master's Degree in Counseling. Evelyn Joyce began her teaching career in Salisbury, Maryland, on the Eastern Shore. She moved to Flint, Michigan, in 1969 where she taught at a business college. She returned to Maryland in 1972 and began her employment with Prince George's County Public Schools teaching at Bowie High School. Her Counseling Career began upon transfer to Largo High School and continued at Potomac High School until she retired in 2004.

Evelyn believed in education and always encouraged students to do their best. She loved her students and often referred to them as her children. Her passion was to help all children realize their potential. If Evelyn were here today, she would encourage students making the transition from high school to college to always remember that education is the key to open the door for greater service to mankind.

It had always been the desire of our scholarship fund president to name the fund in honor of someone who truly believed in education, who genuinely love children and received great joy from seeing them achieve beyond their wildest dreams. Minister Harris prayed for God's guidance in finding the right name for the fund. God spoke it into her heart to name the fund in honor and remembrance of her late sister, Evelyn Joyce Nixon Hinton. The scholarship fund was officially renamed the Evelyn Joyce Nixon Hinton Scholarship Fund in 2009.
